Even Canons. The fault is of the "photographer" in this case. I see so many people keep their pictures on their camera for the entire life of the camera without ever downloading to their computer. After taking some shots for the day or week, plug your camera in and download the pics. Don't blame Nikon. This is your own stupidity. Electronics break. Even Canons. I sympathise with your plight. As a reluctant Nikon user – I'm a civilian professional working for British Army – I know only too well the poor quality of Nikon's image storage software and always had PhotoRescue(not a plug) on hand to retrieve images.

Get a second-hand 400D. I got 10Mp for £250! I love Canon's C-Mos sensor and if you push to an image-stabalised lens you'll never look back!

Thank goodness you were able to retrieve the photos! My heart almost stopped when my hard drive crashed a while ago and I contemplated losing all my photos of my son.
