This new MSI Wind U120 system sounds killer!

  • 160GB HDD

Of course I’m still more than capable of being swayed by a surprise from Apple if they feel up to it at MacWorld.

  1. you and me both jonathan. if apple delivered a netbook in January, i would be one of the first customers. the air whilst v thin, is just too big. i have an asus eee pc 900 which does for the on the go browsing and document prep i need to do (supplementing my iPhone). i wouldn't use everyday (i still like working on a large screen iMac in the office), but for most other things an apple netbook would be just peachy (hey, they could even call it the iBook? what do you think?!?)

  2. The question is, will this Wind model crash Apple Airport routers like the current one does? If so, then hopefully you can swap the wireless card for another for $15 (like the current one). Otherwise, it's a problem that's still unresolved.

  3. I hear you Hugh – If Apple came out with a larger than iPhone slider or smaller than 13 inch macbook it would rock. I realize those are two different things but either one would be very compelling.

  4. I was not aware of any issues as I don't have a Wind now … though it's been at the top of my list like the HP mini note which also offers a sim slot.

  5. Hey Man – After weighing options, I took the plunge w/ Samsung NC10. Very happy with it. No HSDPA (instead use Joikuspot) and small trackpad takes getting used to, but battery life is killer (6-7 hrs). Now just waiting for Samsung's new ultrafast 250G SSD as aftermarket replacement…

Hope all is well with you.

    Neil

  6. that is some serious battery life! Assume that's a 6 cell battery right? I've been avoiding the Samsung but have been hearing good things recently. Damn – every time I try to simplify the list.

  7. Microcenter has these for about $50 off list. Flatmate bought one last weekend – the basic model, since she's planning to use it around the house, not on the go – for $299 (down from $349). Pretty sweet little machine, but I somehow still like my Acer One better.

  8. Just need to confirm that the drivers are all good, but I would love to … Sorta need xp for phone apps unfortunately …

  9. So hey Neil – Is there a SIM slot under your battery? Just reading some reviews and it seems it might be in there…

  10. Just had a look & there is something that could be a SIM slot. It's covered by a flap of plastic that looks like it needs to be cut away because it doesn't hinge. I can't see what's behind it. Need to investigate further.

  11. My netbook is a combination of: 13″ macbook and an old inspiron 700m that I bought 3 years ago (with aftermarket upgrades). The U120 sounds like a good upgrade from the 700m.

  12. Thanks – I'm hearing even with the slot there's no modem … be curious whether something works with a sim in there anyway though if you are brave enough to try

  13. Interesting. There's definitely a slot on mine…but it's not for use on my model.

After removing battery, you can see a place for SIM card on the left, but it is covered with a piece of white contact paper.

    Pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/73696915@N00/sets/

In one of the pics, you can see how I've bent the contact paper by prodding it with a paper clip.

After removing the contact paper and peering inside, it is clear the slot is not intended for use — you can see hardware further inside, but it doesn't appear capable of holding a card in place or even working with the card at all, it appears a card would just fall in and rattle around…

If more can be helpful, pls let me know. Oh yeah, audio quality from the speakers (mounted underneath the unit) is also terrible, but that's to be expected, right?

  14. thanks for the pics – very helpful. I think I might just have to get this one and then add a USB stick modem. the battery life and keyboard features are really swaying me

  15. imo, internal 3g card/sim will result in lesser coverage and bad speeds. I have an internal verizon card in my work laptop and the coverage/download speeds are nowhere near the usb card. I think I'm switching focus to the samsung, for now. 🙂

  16. I have a MSI Wind 100 and I really like it.
The only problem is the graphic card is not that strong – soo don´t expect to be able to view movies on your notebook.

  17. I actually got the Samsung NC10 which is terrific. Videos are ok in VLC rather than WMP. I'm also running Windows 7 and OSX over XP which offers the best battery life, but is well xp.
