If Nokia is about being Open why is data initially set to off?

June 9th, 2009 · Comments · Android, Nokia, iPhone, marketing, mobile

After a lively debate on twitter tonight I’ve decided to reorganize my thoughts into post. My discussion with @chansearrington has really gotten me thinking about what Nokia’s perspective is on data usage and frankly why I think it’s wrong for today’s consumer marketplace.  Let me caveat this by first stating that I am considering only [...]

Access Point Destinations Make it Easy to Get the Best Connection, If You Can Choose One

April 13th, 2009 · Comments · Nokia, gadgets and technology, mobile

Nokia has been making some very nice though admittedly subtle updates to the way the S60 functions on the later devices and having used most of them I’ve been taking this for granted.  Starting in Feature Pack 2 (N85, N79) the Network Setting panel received an update which added something called Destinations.  Destinations are a [...]

The mobile phone is the social camera

April 4th, 2009 · Comments · Nokia, gadgets and technology, mobile

I started to leave a blog comment on Antonio’s post and decided to do it here instead …
When I read the rumor that Apple has ordered a 5MP CMOS sensor for an unspecified product, it screamed to me of another coming disruption, this time around the point-and-shoot slice of the digital camera market. Because while [...]

Could the Nokia Skype Deal Activate Mobile Video Calling?

March 3rd, 2009 · Comments · Nokia, VOIP, gadgets and technology, mobile

While the the obvious intent of a Nokia Skype deal is about voice calling, it could definitely have a substantial impact on mobile video calling.  As noted in the just linked Techlivez post, the Skype deal will integrate Skype directly into Contacts – meaning it’s not a separate application, but rather an available protocol.
It’s too [...]

Nokia and Skype – With an Open Phone it Won’t Matter

February 27th, 2009 · Comments · Nokia, VOIP, politics, software

It was only a matter of time for carriers to make stink about the inclusion of Skype on the N97.  I had first read about the issue via Simon Judge and was surprised it had even take this long to be a public complaint.
Carriers will always hate things that compete with their bread and butter [...]

Samsung’s OmniaHD is seriously impressive!

February 19th, 2009 · Comments · Nokia, gadgets and technology, mobile

In a word … WOW!

I’ve never seen this touch UI in action and love the widgets and transitions.  Samsung really shows the potential for S60 here given that it’s running on S60 5th edition like the Nokia 5800 and N97 yet with a considerably higher degreee of gloss.  I don’t have any sense of [...]

Where are the updates to the S60 Browser?

February 6th, 2009 · Comments · Android, Nokia, gadgets and technology, iPhone, software

Every day I read about new services and ways to use the Android and iPhone webkit browsers, yet there’s been no change to make some of these tools work well with the s60 software.  I can’t even open a new tab without a silly bookmark hack, and it seems there’s been little to no change [...]

Windows 7 “Plays to” DLNA Standards while Apple keeps it closed – as usual

January 24th, 2009 · Comments · Nokia, apple, gadgets and technology, software

While this feature is not currently in the open beta, Play To highlights Windows 7 ability to be both a control point and server in a DLNA network.  What’s so awesome about this is that a ton of devices already have this baked in and Windows 7 can auto-discover them as well as present itself [...]

More N85 and Device Stage

January 22nd, 2009 · Comments · Nokia, software

I got a question on how I had tried the N85 connection to my Windows 7 system and did some more exploration in order to better understand how it works. My usual habit is to select PC Suite when prompted on my phones as they connect to my machines. I’ve done that but [...]

E71 Firmware updated

January 14th, 2009 · Comments · Nokia

Last night before bed, I saw the news and updated my E71 to firmware v200.21.118.  If I’m not mistaken, this is by far the quickest we’ve seen a NAM update following the EMEA release.  Excellent!
I’ve been restoring my applications today and so far so good.  I love the two new black and red themes … [...]

Ovi Suite – Syncing Smoothly in Windows 7

January 13th, 2009 · Comments · Nokia, software

One issue I’ve had running Windows 7 was Nokia’s PC Suite refuses to install due to some privilege issues.  I’ve tried a few tricks and it seems it’s just going to fail.  The good news is that Ovi Suite installs just fine (except for Nokia Music  which I will have to try separately in compatibility [...]

The almost status of Nokia Software Checker

January 12th, 2009 · Comments · Nokia, software

Ricky beat me to blogging this, but I also had the same experience using the Nokia Software Checker on the N79. Nokia Software Checker appears on the newer Feature Pack 2 devices (N79, N85) and appears to be an application who’s sole purpose is to schedule checks against the firmware database.
In theory this is [...]

Cisco to Push into Home Electronics – Why?

December 29th, 2008 · Comments · Nokia, gadgets and technology

I get and respect Cisco’s desire to dig deeper into the home, but I am not convinced that a piece of consumer electronics gear is the way to to do it.  According to the NYT, Cisco is looking to develop a “a digital stereo system that is meant to move music wirelessly around a house.”

Nokia Internet Stick CS-10 – Almost

December 27th, 2008 · Comments · Nokia, gadgets and technology, mobile, travel

The Nokia Internet Stick CS-10 made a quiet appearance at Nokia World earlier this month and the news piqued my interest. Though after a quick check I saw it only supports the 850/2100MHz bands which is a real bummer unlike other higher end 3G modems which also add in 1900MHz for tri-band world compatibility [...]
