Browser Comparison: iPhone vs. Nokia N95 and N800

I took a look at the browsing experience on the iPhone and compared it to the Nokia N95 as well as the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. In general, the iPhone and N800 are much closer experiences, though having used both I’m leaning towards the iPhone. The N800 is definitely still robust for handling your browsing needs – especially with the addition of Flash 9 support, but my preference is for how Safari handles things over Opera.

  4. That is a cool comparative review, first time I’ve seen someone compare the iPhone and the N800 side by side browser performance.

I believe the screen resolution being 3 times higher on the N800 than on the iPhone, it by definition is a better browsing experience since one doesn’t need to zoom in on text all the time and scroll horizontaly and verticaly to be able to read it.

You should check out the Archos 605 WiFi, that one actually supports YouTube, Google Video, Dailymotion and Kewego, unlike the N800 which currently does not playback video smoothly from any of those sites. The Archos automatically takes .flv and decodes it instantly in full screen at full framerate. It also does the same instant full screen playback for any DivX, WMV, H264 and Mp4 video files links one can find on the Internet hosted on HTTP servers.

I think one of eigther Archos or Nokia should take their 800×480 resolution 4.3″ screen, cut off the parts on each side of the screen and provide a product only the size of the touch-screen, this would make the 4″ 800×480 product about the same size as the iPhone and with a usable screen size for browsing and video playback. This form factor is something Archos or Nokia could achieve much faster than I think that UMPCs will be made small enough to use.

  5. Steve / Charbox – Thanks!

@Charbox – I had no idea the Archos could handle media in the you describe. I’ve always been intrigued by them but the user interface has kept me away. They seem to get good marks on capabilities and lower scores from people in how they actually work.

Love the idea of a full touch device… the iPhone really begins to show you what you can do in software.

  6. Yup I’d like a full touch device, but with some very slim and small buttons on the very border for quick scrolling, zooming, volume and menu/exit.. The 2cm on the right side of the Nokia N800’s screen for example seems to be useless other than for it to host the right side speaker. And I think Archos should take away those large buttons also.

  7. I own a N800 and I love the browsing experience.
Searching for a mobile browsing solution and having experienced browsing the web on (older) PDA’s en smartphone, I knew that I wanted a minimum of 800 pixel width for the screen. So when the 770 internet tablet come out I bought it (the first 800 pixel width really mobile browser), The screen size is wonderful and is the best part of the nokia internet tablets. The N800 is faster than the 770, so I got that a year later. Again I love the screen.

Maybe I’ll buy an Iphone when it is released in Europe but I still have my doubts about the low resolution screen. And Nokia will probably release a new (faster) internet tablet when the Iphone is finally released here.

This is a very informative video and it at least gives the impression that the Iphone webbrowing experience is comparable to the N800 (dispite the smaller screen), so I may switch to that one.

The new Archos device is very cool to, but it doesn’t have bluetooth and it doesn’t have a build in phone, so you can’t browse using a 3G connection. (so I prefer the N800, besides Archos uses a very closed software platform for a Linux based system, and it charges money for any software update like the web browser or flash support)

I would like to know what firmware you use in the video? My N800 just got the firmware with skype and my brothers N95 got a firmware update yesterday (version 12 if i’m not mistaken).

  8. bernard – thanks for the comment…

I’m running the IT 2007 release – with Skype.

The all in one features and smaller size of the iPhone make it hard to beat in my book. Even with a lower resolution and smaller screen. The brightness and clarity of things on the iPhone is amazing – even outdoors.

  9. Archos should add 3g either built-in or through a module. Sure the Opera/Flash license costs $30 extra, but you have to take into account that the new Archos is sold for $199 with 4gb and an SD card slot or $299 with a 30gb hard drive and there are no contracts.

  10. Damn you have slow internet connection. Even my 3G in Finland is many times faster. IPhone seem to be very fast. Hopefully Nokia adds tuned Opera 9 soon.

  11. Nice discussion!
As I know Nokia N95 is a smart phone, it’s a phone that can use to surf the internet, send e-mails, has multimedia programs, GPS, etc. The N800 is an internet tablet (imagine a tiny computer) that does nearly everything a normal computer does, with a few exceptions. The iPhone is a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch screen controls and an Internet communications device, all rolled into one portable device making it an outstanding smartphone. On comparing these three I prefer iphone. To compare more features of iphone and nokia check http://www.swotti.com/mobilephones/
