Showtime!

Getting ready… Clearly Apple is getting things set for a big day in the ITMS. I just checked in to see if I could track something down and it’s down. This seems like a big deal as it’s still hours until the event at 1pm EST and things don’t usually shut down in Apple Stores until right prior.

Apple files patent for multi-function handheld device

iLounge points to a most exciting new patent application from Apple. There’s no saying when or if this will come to market, but consider me pre-ordered!

A new Apple patent application published today by the US Patent & Trademark Office details a “multi-functional handheld device” that has the ability to quickly switch between multiple operating modes. The patent, which was filed in March, describes a device with a touch sensitive screen covering the entire front of the unit and the ability to switch between functionalities such as PDA, cell phone, music player, video player, game player, digital camera, GPS, handtop, and remote control.

“Before a particular device functionality can be used, it typically must be selected for use,” a portion of the filing reads. “The selection can come in a variety of forms. For example, the selection may be made via a main menu that includes soft buttons or icons that, when selected, activate the device functionality associated with the soft button. During activation, the GUI for that particular device is brought into view on the display and the software associated with the device is installed, loaded or activated. From that point on, the multi-functional device operates like the selected device.”

Nokia – NYC!

I’ll have to check this out next time I am headed to the city…

On the morning of September 9th, New Yorkers will experience a new way to shop for wireless devices when Nokia opens its second US Flagship Store in New York’s exclusive Fifth Avenue shopping district at 5 East 57th Street. [Nokia]

Bluetooth iPod adapter – coming soon?

So apparently Pioneer’s shooting their mouth off about their new DEH car stereo system with Bluetooth, which apparently will work wonderfully with the Bluetooth adapter they claim Apple has planned for the iPod. [Engadget]

This type of connectivity starts to make all kinds of after-market adjustments quite nice. TomTom is releasing their bluetooth auto connection kit soon as well which would be a nice thing to have all integrated in the car. Adding all these features (Nav, bluetooth etc) starts to add up to what it would have been at initial purchase, but you do get a fair bit of control (and enhanced geekiness) doing it this way.

Facebook’s Microsoft Ad deal

Facebook signed an advertising deal (update: also in NY Times) with Microsoft that will put Microsoft adCenter sponsored links and other ads on the Facebook site. There are no financial terms available for the deal, which runs through 2009.[Techcrunch]

This is what you call corporate synergy. IPG invests $10 Million into Facebook and then parlays the deal to mega-client Microsoft for some ad action. I wonder if there’s any rev-sharing going on…

New Content on Mobileplay

MobilePlay has signed up some new content providers for its service — some fairly big ones. They include The Onion, AccuWeather.com, washingtonpost.com, newsweek.com, slate.com, and U.S.News and World Report. Mobileplay offers the services free, supported by ads. It recently signed a deal with Opera.[MocoNews.net]

I already have Opera Mini installed on my mobile devices so I don’t see the new Mobileplay URL but a quick visit / bookmark revealed that you simply need to hit http://mini.mobileplay.com to take advantage of the good stuff.

Nokia E62 could be a killer

Reports are starting to appear now that the Nokia E62 is coming soon. Thus far the previews are strong — including a nice one from Mossberg this week. I was initially disappointed to learn that this device will not include either 3G or WIFI options as in it’s European sibling the E61, but at the rumored price of $99 with service contract it may more than make up for it. As I begin a new job next week, I might see if I can squeak by without a Blackberry (the usual corporate issue) until this is released.
