I caught that last night in mine as well and have noticed that they visit after each post I’ve made since they started tracking me.

Higher Standards

A story in today’s Journal should bring tears to the eyes of online marketers and publishers. Nielsen Media is going to – woo hoo – double the size of its People Meter panel to, hold on, 10,000 households. It’s allegedly going to spend $70M to upgrade its services, including giving people portable meters so those oh-so-important out of home auds can be watched. This, from a company that can’t measure digital cable or satellite, or do dailies except in 55 markets. Hard to believe $60B in ad decisions still rely on this 1960’s style measurement.

From the what were you thinking files…

A new AOL 9 ad shows Sting spamming random instant message users, foisting on them pieces of his new video. [MarketingWonk]

As noted at the MW site, it seems as though AOL and Sting clearly authorize random and bulk spamming of AOL users for promotional purposes. Sting gleefully zaps out his latest video to a list of strangers… when asked who they are getting a message from, one of the unsuspecting users says, “I don’t know, but he sure does like Sting.”

You have to stop and think about this for a second… as an AOL user you can expect to get spammed with IM from strangers and sending you video as well. What if it’s not that nice…

Spam Sieve working wonders…

I’ve been getting noticeably less spam since my main work accounts switched over to new domains, but I do still get a fair number of annoying messages daily on my personal accounts. I’ve looked for proxy options to handle IMAP but have been unable for one reason or another to deal with them effectively until I really got involved with SpamSieve.

In the latest release, a Bayesian filter was added which has increases the rate of learning as well as the accuracy. I’ve been waiting to write this actually for about two weeks so I could be sure I was actually happy with the performance and I can say that, I am and that it works very well.

I am currently getting over 96% accuracy with only 2 false negatives. I am using it with some not yet released scripts for Mail.app but I would image that they will be released shortly. All is working fine.

Quark Death Watch…

Adobe Systems announced Monday new versions of Photoshop and other key publishing and graphics products, but some of the biggest changes won’t be in the applications.

The software maker’s new product combines Photoshop, the InDesign page layout application and the Illustrator graphics application into the Adobe Creative Suite, a package that includes integrated tools intended to help make it easier to move work from one application or person to another. Chief among the new tools is Version Cue, a basic content management tool intended to improve the way workers share files for collaboration and review. Open Source Democracy

I’ve got a short book coming out next week in the UK called Open Source Democracy. It’s being released as a free publication, by a UK thinktank-network called Demos.

You can download the PDF version of the book, here. Please feel free to repost it anywhere you like, or to make an html version – whatever.

I’ll be doing a public talk and fundraiser for Cybersalon in London, as well. [rushkoff.blog]

.Mac benefits

I’ve been wondering whether or not to renew my .Mac membership, and I have to say that Apple seems to be working on making it worth the $99/year. The latest new benefits: free VersionTracker Plus subscription, free iBlog software, and $30 off a FireWire drive. And that’s in addition to the free StickyBrain 2, Solitare, and Marble Blast that they’ve had for a few weeks.

Now that it’s free, I should probably check out iBlog at some point.

[Backup Brain]

Just checked out iBlog which seems to be the only reader/writer other than NetNewsWire that I’ve found. It publishes pretty seemlessly to your Apple hosted site via your iDisk which is a very nice benefit and advantage for Apple. I wonder how long it will remain an independent product….

Palm OS RSS News Reader Released

Stand Alone software today announced the release of Handheld Headlines/RSS, a dedicated news and RSS reader for the Palm OS of devices. [PalmInfocenter]

I just downloaded and installed and it reflects the usual and expected high quality of Stand Alone Palm apps. Seems to be very well thought out – minus one critical oversight… import for your subscriptions! You have to enter them manually which is not as bad as you might think since the default set is pretty good, but far from what you might really want.

Now that this is here, Ranchero and Stand Alone need to get together on a sync function – not just for subscription files, but for what has been read! That would be fantastic!!

Nokia’s got style!

The just announced 7600 is one of the coolest and most original phones I’ve ever seen. It’s a tiny and beautiful fashion phone that manages to house any feature you could possibly want. It’s coming in Q4…wonder if the US will support it.

One note is how well they thought out even the accessory strategy. There are picture frames and cameras (home surveilance / nannycam) which can all communicate with the phone via MMS.

A Wireless iPod Can Torpedo the Pirates

Riddle me this: What would you get if you crossed a BlackBerry with an iPod? The answer: The future of the music business. Let me explain. Imagine, if you will, an iPod as a wireless digital ladle. It would dip into a nearly bottomless stream of continual music, scooping up any song you wanted, when you wanted, where you wanted. There would be no need for CDs, hard drives, or any other storage device. And trying to capture such music would be about as easy as trapping mist in a jar. Every song would contain a digital expiration date, so, over time, they would evaporate. [BusinessWeek]
