Entourage X v10.1.4 here today, with Exchange support

This new release of Entourage — Microsoft’s e-mail client with personal information management tools — introduces interoperability with Microsoft Exchange Server. Exchange Server is used as a collaborative scheduling and messaging tool in business environments. [MacCentral]

It’s out as scheduled (11am EST). Email seems to work fine, Calendar is funky… I can’t get the scheduling to work properly to show available time for people on our network. May be a bug, or just some secret setting we are missing. Other than this addition, HTML messages seem to render a bit quicker though all else seems to remain the same.

Battle of the blog

A power struggle erupts over a technology widely used to distribute Web logs, pitting blog pioneer Dave Winer against opponents at IBM, Google and others clamoring for a different format. [CNET News.com]

Pioneer updates its digital turntables

We’re still partial to spinning actual records, but Pioneer has updated the CDJ-1000, its CD player for DJs that let’s you cut and scratch CDs sorta like how you would on a turntable with vinyl. The CDJ-1000MK2 has pretty much the same design as the CDJ-1000, just better sound quality and improved response time. [Gizmodo]

I’ve been exposed very directly to the thinking at IDEO through work and find them to be a fascinating company. The article linked is a good read and provides a nice overview…

more and more software

So, I can’t help but play with software…

I’ve been messing with Firebird and Mozilla and really think I am beginning to favor Mozilla to Safari as my browser of choice.

Trying to get into the WikiWeb as well… what do you use? I’ve tried Twiki, MoinMoin, SnipSnap, VoodooPad and Tinderbox…

I’ve yet to give Tinderbox a fair shot, but it seems pretty complex and yet comprehensive as well. According to a comment posted by Mark Bernstein, from Eastgate Systems, you can write locally and then move pages back and forth between your system and your hosted wiki.

Chilly Forecast for Smart Fridge

For the last four years, Swedish company Electrolux has been developing a smart refrigerator with Web access. In the latest incarnation of the appliance, cell-phone users could remotely snap pictures of items inside their fridges. Is this the smart way to the future, or simply a gimmick bound to flop? ThunderBird v0.1 Released

Mozilla ThunderBird, an enhancement on Mozilla’s mail component, has reached it’s first milestone release. I recommend that everyone at least give it a try, you’ll be surprised.

Like Pixels? Check out MacDesign [MacMerc]

Indeed – it is quite nice! hard to believe it is only a 0.1 release. Since I’ve switched over to IMAP it is much easier to explore new email clients. This looks like a real winner, even in such an early stage.

Tinderbox 2

ROCK ON! Just got an email announcement from Eastgate announcing the release of Tinderbox 2 AND of the Tinderbox Wiki which should be doubly interesting. (I REALLY hope the wiki is a new feature of Tbox. That would make this old geek very very happy.)

[The Universal Church Of Cosmic Uncertainty]

I’ve been playing with various Wiki systems and while there is a Wiki for Tinderbox, it is not based on Tinderbox itself which tells me that like VoodooPad, it is simply still a local system, that can export to html.

finally back…

I’ve really been burning it at both ends lately. I’ve not blogged much in that time and am hoping to get back to things promptly. Today has been spent sleeping in, reviewing a filing much email that has been collecting and just trying to re-wrap my brain around. Feels good to finally have some R&R and looking forward to seeing some friends this evening.

GPRS/CDMA 1xRTT laptop card

Verizon and Vodafone are collaborating on a dual-band laptop card that connects to both GPRS and CDMA 1xRTT networks, which means you’d be able to easily access both Vodafone’s GPRS network in Europe and Verizon’s CDMA network here. [Gizmodo]

Tired and a bit cranky

I am riding the Acela train back right now (10:21pm EST) from Philadelphia to NYC and I am sitting behind the most annoying family of all time. It’s mom, dad, two daughters and Grandparents all basically shouting to each other in Spanish while the younger sister (probably 5) literally climbs and slides over the seats and floor. The older daughter has yet to sit down and is facing backwards towards the rest of us while she text-messages no one.

I am riding the Acela train, Amtrak’s high priced allegedly business class only train, yet this family has seriously commandeered whatever civility would be possible under normal circumstances. I can actually hear them through my headphones (which are pretty loud) and can’t help but be distracted continuously as they jam against the seats excitedly.

Could I move? Sure. It’s only an hour ride (the seat back just came fully back without warning followed by an adjustmnt which shook the tray on which I am trying to write.) so it should not be that big a deal. I guess I am just tired as I did have to travel to PA to work a full one. It’s just that my expectations are that a family should get their kids under control when outside the home.

What you do in your home, is your business. What happens in my public space is ours. Ah, The joys of travel…
