    JeepSafari

We all use and love Safari, it’s already a great browser. Organising bookmarks is easier than ever before, but wouldn’t is be nice if the bookmarks you add on your iMac at work, would show up on your PowerBook at home? Now it’s possible with JeepSafari. Think of it as iSync for Safari.

    Rising Tide Studios for sale

It was only a matter of time…. This paper has lost much signifance and relevance since the dot com hey day. I would expect that whoever does buy it (if anyone) merges it into their existing biz pub.

Crain’s NY reports that Jason Calacanis is putting Rising Tide Studios (the parent company of Venture Reporter) up for sale… [Gawker]

    Document

I really do believe that Apple is really working to make a full defection from MS Office while maintaining the compatibility but of course enhancing things in the “oh so Apple way.”

Potentially the most interesting Apple software software rumour — especially in concert with Keynote — is Document, an MS Word killer. As whispered by MacWhispers:

The new package, said to be named “Document,” includes 100% import and export functionality with Microsoft Word files, but goes much farther than that venerable word processor has ever managed in giving the user a full-scope document development environment

Most interesting is a report that it will also provide many alternate output format choices, including advanced .PDF (with selectable compression), several levels of HTML (including DHTML), a wide assortment of multimedia formats, and will provide easy to use tools for adding XML tags to documents.

Certainly more interesting than going up against Office with AppleWorks. What _is_ the future of AppleWorks, anyway?

    IBM enhances wireless notebooks

Big Blue on Monday will release a new family of ThinkPads that feature dual-band wireless and fashion choices when it comes to the navigational stick on the keyboard. [CNET News.com Enterprise Computing]

The high-end members of the line come with dual-band wireless technology built in. Dual-band wireless makes it possible to create 300-foot zones to send and receive files wirelessly using both the 802.11b and 802.11a technologies. Although most wireless networks now use 802.11b–also known as Wi-Fi–802.11a networks transfer data at a much faster rate and feature more communications channels. As a result, 802.11a networks, and another standard called 802.11g, are expected to grow rapidly.

I guess it would have been too much to have expected that Apple and the rest of the world would have chosen the same technology. If PowerBooks have 80211.g and PC books have 802.11a, what happens when you travel to another company with your machine? Looking like you are going to be SOL.

Chrysler tries 6-year loans in effort to boost PT Cruiser sales

In an effort to get the market for PT Cruisers younger, Chrysler is looking to offer a new 6 year lease term that includes special music and arts events as a bonus. According to the article, a 6 year lease poses some new risk into the financial equation, since more people tend to default the longer the stretch. Will this work? Only time will tell… I don’t know that music events are going to lower the age appeal of this car alone… Especially compared to new comers like the Honda Element which clearly targets the younger Generation Y set with a car that has features to match their (supposed) lifestyles.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — DaimlerChrysler AG’s Chrysler is trying to lure younger buyers for its PT Cruiser with six-year loans that lower monthly payments and with art and music shows after the sport-utility vehicle’s sales fell in 2002.

A new sketch of college freshmen

This year’s college freshmen reported spending less time studying and more time on computers in their senior year of high school than any previous entering class, says the latest annual survey of first-year college students. [USA Today: Nation]

“Typing a topic into a (search engine) is certainly faster than physically looking for something in a research library,” says Hilary Lieberman Link, first-year class dean at Barnard College in New York City. But “what we all wish to avoid is students doing all research through the Web and losing the art of true research.”

Pat Oles, dean of students at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., agrees, adding that books often lose out to computers when high-schoolers have the choice.

    RSS 2.0 feed now available…

I finally dealt and added an RDF feed that works with RSS 2.0. You can replace the RSS 1.0 feed with this one if you prefer. Links and the few pictures I post will now come through in your newsreaders. Both feeds fully validate so you should have no issue with either.

More – I am debating just replacing the 1.0 feed with the 2.0 feed so existing RSS readers don’t have to do anything. Good or bad idea? Thoughts?

    Request to my neighbors….

So here’s a good question for you. How do you politely request someone’s kid to shut up? We can regularly here our neighbor’s kids screaming, both in pleasure and with tears, from their apartment and within the halls. In their apartment, OK. I am can deal with that. But in the halls? They seem to think it is a great idea to let their kids run up and down the hall for fun (during the early morning hours and on weekends). These kids love to scream in pleasure… We can’t possibly be the only people who feel some angst towards these kids, but what are we supposed to do?

    15″ Powerbooks…

    According to mac.fryke.com:

Valentine’s day, our sources say, is the day we’ll see them. 15.4″ displays, aluminum enclosure & Bluetooth. Firewire 800 is in, too, no information about the keyboard backlighting is available, though.

    Referral Spam must stop

It has been talked about before on other blogs, but I guess they finally found me…

I received my first referral spam from a company in Colorado called Clutch Interactive (no link will be provided). As I was browsing, blogdex in Net News Wire, I realized that they have figured out a way to make it look like we are talking about them as well – it’s called Webmaster offer. Blogdex tracks the blog chatter and somehow the CI folks have figured a way to leech inside. This must be stopped immediately. I know of no way to filter this, yet….anyone have a thought?

Wired 11.02: The Civil War Inside Sony

Sony Music wants to entertain you. Sony Electronics wants to equip you. The problem is that when it comes to digital media, their interests are diametrically opposed. [Daypop Top News Stories]

As a member of the Consumer Electronics Association, Sony joined the chorus of support for Napster against the legal onslaught from Sony and the other music giants seeking to shut it down. As a member of the RIAA, Sony railed against companies like Sony that manufacture CD burners. And it isn’t just through trade associations that Sony is acting out its schizophrenia. Sony shipped a Celine Dion CD with a copy-protection mechanism that kept it from being played on Sony PCs. Sony even joined the music industry’s suit against Launch Media, an Internet radio service that was part-owned by – you guessed it – Sony. Two other labels have since resolved their differences with Launch, but Sony Music continues the fight, even though Sony Electronics has been one of Launch’s biggest advertisers and Launch is now part of Yahoo!, with which Sony has formed a major online partnership. It’s as if hardware and entertainment have lashed two legs together and set off on a three-legged race, stumbling headlong into the future.

    Less is More!

I had to run a few errands in SoHo this morning and made a stop at the Apple Store. They had a single 12″ PowerBook on display and it was amazing!

The size has been bothering me until now. I was not sure that I would like the screen size / resolution, but now that I have seen it I can say with all honesty that I would not miss having 3 more inches of real estate if I had to get the smaller book. I still want to see the 17″ when it comes in, and would still like to check out the pending revision to the 15″ the rumor sites have already been whispering about.

The 12 inch book, has some very nice design elements to it. The hinge for the screen is terrific and seems more like the iBook than the TiBook. All the ports are on the left side with the slot drive taking up about 2/3 of the right edge. I would take a day or two to adjust to some new hand positions with the keyboard after 2 years with my current machine since everything is repositioned on the smaller platform.

Interestingly the machine had no internet connection since they are actually waiting on the Airport Extreme card and base stations to come in. In a quick browse I would say that apps started much faster than on my TiBook 500 and overall the general performance was nice. Apple did not ship the machine with Safari and defaulted to IE which was also a bit strange. Otherwise, I can’t think of anything but wow. The size, weight and general feel of the machine were all excellent. My prediction is that Apple is not going to be able to keep up with the demand for these. The bang for the buck is the best they have offered. Loaded for less than $2000 + Airport Extreme which is a BTO option…

    Connection issues?

Are you having a more difficult time reaching the site? I am… My email seems to be having trouble as well as my connection to the site. I can’t figure out whether it is the DNS on my domain or whether my Host is having some issues. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
