Pop Goes the Weasel

But will they? Changing Advertising agencies and management shifts are signs that change is afoot.

Now that Steve Case has finally stepped down as the figurehead of AOL-TimeWarner, the media empire is free to spin-off it’s Internet services division and become a good ol’ content provider, again. That is, if they can remember how. Case’s departure marks the real end of the Internet-as-business era, the ultimate admission that kudzu-like though it may be, the interactive network is not the financial behemoth of the century. Dish Network – HDTV PVR

My choice for satellite TV anytime would probably be DirecTV over Dish, but this box certainly ups the ante for consideration. TiVO certainly has their work cut out for them and hopefully time to answer this as I don’t recall seeing any specs yet on their pending HD PVR box.

The DishPVR 921 satellite TV receiver is a Personal Video Recording product with the ability to record both standard and high definition programming. DISH Network features five nationwide HDTV channels: CBS-HD, HBO-HD, SHOWTIME-HD, Discovery HD, DISH-On-Demand pay-per-view HD movies and a 24-hour HDTV demonstration channel. Using a massive 250 gigabyte hard drive, the DishPVR 921 is capable of recording up to 40 hours of high-definition programming, up to 250 hours standard definition programming, or any combination of the two. Other capabilities include the ability to record two programs at the same time while watching a third pre-recorded program, and picture-in-picture capabilities on any TV. More details including price and availability will be announced later this year.

The Big Heist: How AOL took Time Warner

I just finished watching this show on CNBC. I highly recommend it to anyone interesting in the media space. The program, CNBC’s first documentary is an excellent account of what and how the merger of these giants came to be. They have captured interviews with great business minds like Sumner Redstone, John Malone, Michael Eisner, Rupert Murdoch, and Bob Pittman in addition to Steve Case and Gerald Levin as well as a host of others. Certainly a timely replay given Steve Case’s news tonight.

Exactly three years ago, America Online exchanged its astronomically priced stock for the Time Warner media empire. A clash of corporate cultures began almost immediately, and the merged company has suffered ever since. CNBC’s David Faber exlores the much-maligned merger through interviews with media moguls and the people who built AOL Time Warner.

Steve Case Resigns!

Major news from AOL…

NEW YORK, Jan 12, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) — AOL Time Warner Inc. ( AOL ) today announced that Steve Case has decided to step down as Chairman effective at the Annual Shareholders Meeting in May.

Case notified CEO Dick Parsons and the Board of Directors of his decision over the weekend.

In informing the Board, Case said:

“As you might expect, this decision was personally very difficult for me, as I would love to serve as Chairman of this great company for many years to come, and as an architect of the merger I have felt it was important that I stay the course as Chairman and help get things on track. However, after careful consideration, I believe stepping down is in the best interest of the company, for three reasons.

Insert Safari URLs 1.0.1

I don’t use Entourage, but I did request this feature for Safari. I miss the ease in which you are able to email a link from both Chimera and IE. Hopefully soon enough.

Insert Safari URLs is a script that will take URLs selected from open windows in Apple’s “Safari” web browser and insert them into a message composition window in Microsoft Entourage. Multiple URLs can be selected.

Clutter your desktop with Album art

It’s called Clutter . The reason I wrote it is that I find that iTunes organizes stuff too neatly . When I buy music on CD, I keep the newish and in-vogue CDs lying around on my desk or on top of the stereo for a while. Then when I’m deciding what to listen to, my eye will be caught by one of them and I’ll decide to play it. But nowadays, when I either get music in MP3 form (from eMusic or epitonic ) or rip the CD and file it away, the only reminder of its existence is in iTunes, and I find that the new stuff vanishes away in a huge alphabetical list of everything I already have. And besides, I really like cover art and miss not having it around anymore.

So I decided to create a way to replicate that same very functional clutter on my computer. The app Clutter lets you make little windows that look like CD covers. Double-clicking one, or selecting it and hitting Space, tells iTunes to start playing that CD. That’s about it — here’s what it looks like:
