FullScreenSafari.ape 1.0

Safari has been really treating me well since I downloaded it, but one thing that has been driving me a bit nutty is how the windows open. My windows have been opening as if after the first one opens – cascading down. I guess I like things neat on screen and prefer the window locked in the upper left corner. I also prefer each new window to also take that placement and have been moving things there as needed. That is, until now.

FullScreenSafari.ape 1.0, which was just released prevents the cascading effect and keeps each window exactly where I like it. You need to use Application Enhancer from Unsanity which is freeware in order to activate this haxie. Enjoy!

Why are Safari and Sherlock two different applications?

Interesting perspective with a few interesting mockup screen shots. Definitely worth the browse.

Why the distinction between regular web browsing and web browsing using specialized interfaces for structured data? Using Watson to find movie times is great, but it means having a separate application running…and for ticket purchases, it dumps me back into a web browser anyway. Apple’s Sherlock app offers functionality similar to Watson. Why not merge Sherlock and Safari into one application? Wither Sherfari?

Sony debuts feature-laden CLIE PEG-NZ90

Sony amazes me again with their new device…integrated Bluetooth, a 2 MegaPixel Camera and the addition of a removeable battery are a few of the niceties…WiFi is still CF from Sony only and also still $150. The main and only issue with this unit is the price – $800! Ouch.

Macintosh: An Acquired Taste?

Perhaps, but I feel quite a bit different than Michael Kanellos who wrote (on Keynote) in his News.com Perspective:

Technically, it was fabulous–and completely impractical. Microsoft’s PowerPoint exists for one reason: Sales representatives use it to lull their audiences into an agreeable mood before asking for money. “Your company is fabulous, but I can’t stand that little man holding the stopwatch and scratching his head. We’re going to go with the vendor with that Egyptian papyrus theme,” is a statement that will never come out of a corporate buyer’s mouth.

I guess Michael is not from or involved in a creative industry. In Advertising and Marketing, the presentation can be everything. You need to sell and create excitement about the idea (not necessarily a product) you are selling and the right tools can make this work easier. PowerPoint is not the right tool. It has just been the only tool. I am certainly ready for a change.

See SPOT walk…

Bill Gates doing his song and dance routine at CES. I have to admit that this does sound interesting. Though I doubt any time soon that we will see any Mac compatibility.

While initial presentations on SPOT have stayed on the theoretical side, Gates on Wednesday demonstrated the first devices that will use the technology. Watchmakers Fossil, Citizen and Suunto all plan to have SPOT-enabled models available by the end of the year.

The watches will connect to PCs to calibrate themselves, download software and connect wirelessly to streaming data beamed over FM radio signals to grab the latest sports scores or stock prices.

Gates hailed the watches as the first fruition of Microsoft’s effort to seamlessly blend digital data into everyday life. “This is something we’ve been working on for a number of years, and it’s really exciting to see it coming to reality,” he said. “We see these devices continuing to get smarter and get better at knowing what messages you might be interested in at a particular time.”

He also noted that the forthcoming watches have faster processors and four times as much memory as the first IBM PCs.

More theoretical SPOT items included refrigerator magnets that wirelessly retrieve information on local traffic or specials at area restaurants.

Safari Keyboard Shortcuts…

Safari contains a number of new-and-existing keyboard commands. To see the entire list, click the Safari icon and choose “Show Package Contents.” In the new window that opens, navigate to Contents -> Resources -> English.lproj -> Shortcuts.html.

Thanks Sandro!

iCommune 1.0b2

iCommune is a plug-in which extends Apple’s iTunes software to share music over the network. Your friends’ music libraries appear in the iTunes source list. You can browse their collections, and choose to download or stream their music. It also allows you to make your own music library available to others.

I tried to get this working tonight but had no luck… had personal web sharing on, appletalk on and shared both systems to be sure and neither system was able to show the other’s library. I used both a network IP as well as computer.local address. Have to email the guy when I get a chance, or just wait for the next version.

Hopefully the Rendezvous feature at MacWorld NY 2002 will finally activate when the iLife suite is available on January 25.

mod_rendezvous 1.3

If you noticed in Safari, there is a Bookmark Menu pull down for rendezvous, but most likely nothing shows up just yet…This mod for Apache 1.3 should fix that. Very cool!!

mod_rendezvous is an Apache 1.3.x module which when installed and enabled makes causes all running Apache 1.3.x servers to register themselves on rendezvous, and thus be visible in Apple’s new Safari browser under the Rendezvous section of the bookmarks, and in any other application which browses for Rendezvous enabled web browsers.

Comparing the New Powerbooks…

I think I am leaning my interest on the smaller 12″ model. I know I can live without FireWire 800, can add the SuperDrive and the 867MHz G4 is fast enough for my needs considering I have been very satisfied with my original 500Mhz model for almost 2 years. The real question is how readable I would find the screen. The resolution is what I am used to, but now on a much smaller screen.

I know I would absolutely love the 17″ model, but am concerned about the size in my bag and having to carry the “extra” weight.

I guess it really does not matter unless I can get my office to agree it is time to upgrade… 😉

Come On And Safari With Me

It’s out. Download it here. Yes, I am a member of the Safari team at Apple. I work primarily on the WebCore, the open source portion of Safari that contains KHTML (as well as the implementation of the Qt subset required to support KHTML). In future blogs I’ll be talking about some of the changes and architectural improvements that we made to KHTML and explain those in more detail, but for now I’m going to get some much-needed sleep. 🙂

Tivo is using Rendezvous…

Just caught this in a Press Release from Apple. I guess I need to get a new TiVo!

“TiVo’s upcoming premium service package will use Rendezvous technology to automatically discover Macs within the home network and determine which services they provide, allowing customers to listen to their shared music or view their shared photos on their TV,” said Jim Barton, co-founder and CTO for TiVo. “We are excited about working with Apple on other ways Rendezvous can help TiVo Series2 DVRs connect to a Mac to deliver future services.”

Safari Tip for Bloggers

Assuming you start your reading on page with a blogroll (or just a page with links) you can use the new SnapBack (also Option+Apple+P) tool to jump back quickly and pick another site to surf. You can also choose to mark any page for SnapBack (Option+Apple+M). Dig it!

Hopefully the Safari team will pay attention to our feedback. I have already suggested the addition of Tabs, the use of Keychain for password management and Form AutoFill.

Great Keynote!

Overall it was great… no special new gadget, but two new beautiful powerbooks and some really great changes to the iApps now called iLife as a suite.

I also really like the new browser which of course I am currently testing out.

The presentation software (Keynote) and Final Cut Express also look excellent and will need to be given a test drive as soon as possible…

Be sure to check out Apple
