Apple needs to release a fix ASAP for Airport disk support

While there does not seem to be anything official anywhere I can confirm and have seen other reports in forums that Apple’s Airport Extreme (N) does not currently support RAID disks. My Western Digital My Book 1TB absolutely does not work, period. When I connect a small portable 100GB USB disk, I am immediately prompted for my network password to access the disk.

The goal in updating my Airport was to mainly get a low-cost NAS-like service going so all my home systems could easily share photos and music as well as gain easy access to backup. I am not sure why RAIDs are not seen by the Airport, but it’s seriously limiting the functionality I’d imagine most people looking to extend network storage would want.

I’m hoping there’s a software update in my future to fix this this — until then be warned.

  1. 1. The airport disk feature requires the usb storage device to be of a certain format:

    ie.
    FAT16 / FAT32 / HFS+

    2. Try reformatting the WD Mybook 1TB using HFS+ via disk utility and then connect it to the AEBN again?

  2. If I had another 500GB drive just sitting here I might be able to test that, but I’ve definitely read about other issues with RAID systems and the Airport Disk function.

Do you have it working by any chance?

  3. Found this thread searching for info on the same issue I’m having. Just got a MyBook 500GB (FAT32), works fine plugged into machines but doesn’t work at all via my Airport Extreme. I can mount SOMETHING from Macs and Windows boxes, but there are no contents displayed (which there is, a lot of it). I can’t even connect to it via Linux. Meh.

  4. I’ve abandoned my plan for Airport Disk … I found a cheap 500GB Maxstor at staples and have it connected through a PPC Mac Mini to feel my AppleTV over ethernet.

My MyBook is not very reliable for long term connectivity and dismounts as it sees fit…

  5. The MyBook is getting returned. I found some other threads on Apple Support indicating the MyBook drivers are buggy and won’t work with Airport Extreme. I’ve found it also doesn’t dismount properly, and on Linux it behaves oddly (disappearing at random, hard to remount). Wish I’d known all this early this week…

  6. I purchased mine in an emergency when another disk (Ximeta) failed. I regret it, though I use it now for video editing and do like the FW 800 access…
