What will the Nokia N800 software update bring?

There are a few bugs I’m hoping will get squashed when the next software release comes out … scheduled for any day now.
I’m sure other people have things they’d like to see fixed, but these are ones I deal with on an almost daily basis:

  • Random Reboots – Think it’s been confirmed as a DSP issue and something that has been discussed on the users mailing list.
  • Bluetooth – While it’s great when it works, there are plently of times after a start-up that my bluetooth refuses to turn on, which means I need to reboot until it either turns on automagically, or allows me to activate it through the control panel.
  • Flash speed and responsiveness – this is the YouTube / Google video. Today’s tweak is to set the cache high and the quality low which you can do with a tap and hold on flash movie. It does not seem to work as a general preference, but certainly helps quite a bit if you want to watch something immediately.
  • Application quit errors – while vastly improved on the N800 from the 770, it still happens and is definitely something that needs addressing. Usually happens to the browser. Not sure whether this is an OS or application issue.

There are also features (like Skype and Rhapsody) coming very soon. I’ve actually been fortunate enough to see one of those in action as a hack of sorts and been assured that as good as it is in “hack-mode” the real release will be very solid.
Features I really want:

  • Bluetooth headset support – man do we need this — even if Uncle Nokia thinks headset guys are usually a bit round in the middle (an inside joke)… this would really enable a better VOIP experience.
  • Actually while we are at it, why not A2DP support as well so we can use wireless stereo headphones.
  • Enhanced Video codec support – .MPEG4 would be killer, though I know a lot of windows users really want to see Windows Media added as well.
  • I’d love to see that Nav Kit in the US… supposedly coming in March which of course it is. Perhaps it makes sense to show all the cards with the software update.
  • I’d also love to see some new easter eggs… FM Radio was a nice discovery, but there’s got to be some more goodies hiding under the covers….

I’m sure there are other things, but these are ones I actively think about that would greatly enhance my daily usage. If you’ve got others, let’s here about it in the comments!

  1. Have you tried Maemo Mapper? If you’ve got a cheap GPS unit (I can recommend the GlobalSat) then it’s sort of free and stuff, and really quite good. You can get it to download maps as you go from Google Maps or Yahoo Maps and it’ll cache em locally so you can plot out your whole course before you go and save on bandwidth.

  2. Please have them do something about the local IP address issue. Wifi works well at home but when I’m at a coffee shop, more often than not, I get a red question mark over the wifi “globe” and a “local IP address” message. Still searching the forums for a solution. About the only thing I haven’t tried is re-flashing the unit. I can’t wait for the update.

I’ve had issues with bluetooth not starting as well. When it’s up I’ve had no problems using DUN with my sprint Treo 650.

Get Skype working on the N800. We’re a Mac houshold and Google Talk doesn’t work for us.

Have a view option in the RSS feed reader which shows articles from all feeds in one panel.

  3. Skype is going to be an official application release, but I am pretty certain it’s coming later than this one. Rhapsody then Skype I believe…

The Bluetooth and WiFi issues are critical as this is an Internet Tablet after-all.

Google Talk is great — especially with Video.

  4. I am a window user and would like several improvements with my N800.

    1. A Robust personal information manager that requires only one database for all referenced applications.

    2. Media10 player would alow surfing in a windows world.

    3. Being able to record radio would allow lisening later or recording favorite programs.

    4. The media player will not remember the secondary media card and will launch only by tapping on files to launch.

    5. The RSS feed will not register new sites.

    6. When files are downloaded, there is sometimes mising libraries and files that are neded for installation. Some mechagnism that woul allow finding missing files would be appreciated.

Thanks for the opportunity to vent.

  5. I’m a little off topic now plus the fact that the patch is already out. But the things I use the most on my Windows Mobile device that I haven’t yet found on the N800 are:

    1) Bible Reader (Yeah, I know the eSword is out there but I’m not technical enough to install all the libraries and such that they need to work. So as far as my limited Linux understanding is concerned, it doesn’t exist)

    2) A decent Solitaire game. (Again, I know that Maemodrake is out there, but it SUCKS!! I’m comparing it to PDAMills Klondike)

    3) A decent Word document editor. (I know there are programs that convert Word docs into text. But, really, text??? Why not just open it natively like OpenOffice does?)

    4) A decent wheather+time zone+currency conversion+area code lookup+cloth size conversion+++ like WorldMate http://www.mobimate.com (The ‘Clock’ program that comes with the Nokia is a decent start, but if you could add wheather for tapped areas, current day or night shadow map, and currency conversion to this, it would be pretty good.)

    5) A decent Dictionary program. (WhiteStork kind of sucks as it is super slow, sometimes cannot open up a word that it has already found, user has to reload everything every time they use it, kind of ugly and unconfigurable.)

    6) A decent wifi tool. I am use to “WiFiFoFum” which is a free program for detecting wifi signals near you, their strength, their mac address, wep security mode + having a GPS allows you to create a POI table of where you located the signals.

    7) Last, the whole PIM thing on the Nokia is a sore subject as their is no unified direction in this area. Different camps seem to have their feelings on what is the best approach. I personally, would like to take my Outlook contacts, ToDo’s, Calendar items, notes, etc. and have them synced since my work and home both utilize M$.

Sigh, maybe in 6 months or so things will be better. But I doubt it since the 770 has been out for over a year and there is still very little progress in most of these areas.

  6. what about adding an IR to it so you can use it as tv remote … and usb connector so you can attach devices to it …
