iMovie Letterboxing…

This is making me crazy! Pretty sure I need to setup a new widescreen project to prevent this from happening in the future…

Forgot my watch

Even though I have a variety of devices (phones, tablet, gps …) in my bag that tell time I still feel weird without it.

Steve Jobs loathes DRM just like rest of us

This is simply awesome. From Steve Jobs…

Imagine a world where every online store sells DRM-free music encoded in open licensable formats. In such a world, any player can play music purchased from any store, and any store can sell music which is playable on all players. This is clearly the best alternative for consumers, and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat. If the big four music companies would license Apple their music without the requirement that it be protected with a DRM, we would switch to selling only DRM-free music on our iTunes store. Every iPod ever made will play this DRM-free music.

Why would the big four music companies agree to let Apple and others distribute their music without using DRM systems to protect it? The simplest answer is because DRMs haven’t worked, and may never work, to halt music piracy. Though the big four music companies require that all their music sold online be protected with DRMs, these same music companies continue to sell billions of CDs a year which contain completely unprotected music. That’s right! No DRM system was ever developed for the CD, so all the music distributed on CDs can be easily uploaded to the Internet, then (illegally) downloaded and played on any computer or player. [Steve Jobs @ Apple.com]

Now there is unfortunately nothing here stating that they will in fact abolish DRM, but it is a massively public statement from the current leader in*digital distribution on how the system can be open and fair to both consumers, stores and device makers. I know I am not alone in wishing we get there sooner rather than later. DRM sucks for everyone.

What’s on my Desk?

Yesterday I looked down and saw I was actively using three systems each with a keyboard and screen.

What's on my desk?

(just out of view to the right is a Nokia N93 and I took this with the N73)

I had taken a shot previous and I think I’ve reeled in my tech addition somewhat… though I am clearly using a different array of stuff:

What Gear is on your Desk?

I live in a house now and have a lot more space to stash things … so there’s quite a bit more you just can’t see here at HQ, though what you see in that first picture is in active rotation. What’s on your desk?

So simple a child can do it

While the Nokia N800 is a mobile powerhouse it is also extremely simple and fun to use.

My three year old daughter Hannah honed her skills with the computer and mouse in the last week and has quickly begun to advance to mastering stylus control and some new applications.

Here’s a quick video of her enjoying the painting program tonight before bed.

BTW — I shot this video on my N93 and then swapped the card over to the N800 where I uploaded the video to YouTube, and wrote this post!

(I did have to actually repost this as there was some crazy line break in the post that messed up the YouTube embed link and wreaked some temporary havoc with my page layout. Think it was the Opera browser form for WordPress… too much text with wrapping in fingerpad input mode.)

Just a bit cold today…

What makes Twitter fun…

Getting posts from Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker like this…

Got caught by the Death Star and had to beat up some Stormtroopers. This stormtrooper uniform really doesn’t help with my constant chafing. [Luke Skywalker]

Katonah in the Snow

Katonah, originally uploaded by atmasphere.

It’s finally Winter here… Snow makes all the difference. While not a lot, it feels more like the winter wonderland we’ve all come to expect rather than the temperate climate we’ve had to date this season.

A Child’s Insight

I was watching a DVD with my 3yr old daughter Hannah yesterday and it skipped, paused and actually restarted.  She said immediately “maybe the TV is tired of playing this DVD, Dad.”

I had been thinking how tired I was of watching this particular show myself, but found it amazing that she considered this notion for the TV itself… 😉

Beautiful sunset outside tonight… the N80 did not seem to capture the rich reds I was seeing, but, you will hopefully still get the idea.

Not a Submarine

This tank is getting buried in the ground at our house to power a generator we’ve just had installed.. should be online by next Wednesday — just in time for the force of Winter.

Note the cigarette butts… thanks electricians!

Mobile Usage Habits

I’ve been using a lot of mobile devices lately and it struck me today somewhat obviously actually, but I am a massive data user — far more than voice. Consider this – since getting the N80ie yesterday the only phone number I’ve added to it was actually my YouMail voicemail number — not the Cingular number (or my phonebook) stored on the SIM. Instead of even thinking about syncing my addressbook over, I instead focused on getting my core apps installed so the device would be familiar to the way I’ve been using all the N-Series devices. Here’s the basic list of apps I use everyday:

  • GMail Mobile
  • Handy Taskman
  • Handy Weather
  • Handy Clock
  • Shozu
  • Birdstep Smartroaming — with WiFi you want to be able to use a single access point and let the device find the quickest available wherever you are.
  • GooSync sync profile so I can sync my calendar from Google…

I get text alerts from Google Calendar for when I need to be somewhere and YouMail also sends a callerID text for voicemails which is quite nice.

Hard drive meltdown!!

I am currently suffering a hard drive meltdown…

All my digital bits are surprisingly ad hoc and the drive that is failing currently stores ALL my digital music — about 160GB give or take a few GB 201GB. It’s a 250GB Ximeta Netdisk that I’ve been running in USB mode to a Mac Mini and the drive seems to be whirling up and down without a reliable connection. I’ve gotten it to connect to my computer a few times, though the finder has actually locked up while in the process…

I’ve got two other drives here, though only my 200GB LaCie Firewire can handle the content — once I kill or move what’s on it. That drive had a backup of an older iPhoto library (moved to my 120GB drive now) as well as a slew of archived DVDs which I am actually deleting as I own them and can re-rip. I’m hopeful that the Ximeta will stay connected long enough to transfer the content over, but I am not that hopeful unfortunately. All my purchased content is on my iPod so that’s cool and most of the collection is ripped from my CDs, which are sitting in my garage in “storage” while our basement is being worked on.

UPDATE — I’m screwed unless I can figure out a very creative plan.  I’ve got the drive mounted, but there is way more stuff than I’ve got room to move at the moment.  I think I’ve figured a consistent technique for getting the Ximeta back online, so I feel reasonably comfortable taking it offline tonight in order to let it stay cool, but I need a new hard drive in the am in the worst way.

Take some advice here kids — get a backup plan going…

I’ve been eyeing a nice Infrant NAS RAID which really would be saving my ass right now if I had just purchased it a month ago.

Free Agent

I am officially a free agent.

I am currently considering career options and feel like this is the ideal point for me to make a change. I’m looking for something that will enable my passion for technology and my experience in marketing to live nicely together — hopefully in a highly entrepreneurial environment. I’m not sure where it will all net out, but am looking forward to the journey. If you know of anything that might be a good fit, please let me know!

Cosmetic Changes

Made some cosmetic changes to the site today. Feeling pretty good about it so far… I was getting tired of the old theme and have spent some time playing with the new settings and getting everything just where I want it. Please let me know if something is acting up.
