MWC – Sony Xperia X1

One of the more exciting devices at the Mobile World Congress last week was the Sony Xperia X1. At least until I got a closer look …

The hardware is actually really nice. The demo guy I encountered though was nervous about letting anyone get too close and it seemed the more I watched the less there was to actually see. Form factor seemed like an N95 open and expanded, though the screen was 800×480 so I’m thinking the actual size is a bit wider to accommodate the pixels. As you can see in the following video I was not allowed to get too close for a comparison with the Nokia N810 which I had at the ready.

Pricing was unknown, but I’d be surprised if it was less than $800 and closer to $1000. It has every band for 3G including TMO USA’s 1700 which is nice to see…

From other videos I’ve seen around this product is really only final in hardware. Sony’s UI team still has a long way to go to make this more than the HTC Touch which has a very light shell running on top of Windows Mobile. Sony seems to have included a few tricks here – the panels and a media player which is more like that on the PSP, but otherwise it’s Windows Mobile 6 under the hood…

Yahoo! Announces OneConnect at the Mobile World Congress

Yahoo announced OneConnect an amazingly cool service today that looks like a truly killer mobile social connector.  OneConnect will allow you to view and participate across social networks in a a way much like Jaiku does now – though it seems like it will work for most of your existing social services.  It´s not ready for release quite yet and details of exactly how it works were hard to confirm, but here´s a video of what you can expect.

I´m very excited by this and see that Yahoo! has finally come forward with something exciting in mobile.  Because the mobile is something you always have with you it´s truly the key piece in staying connected.  That the OneConnect service will work with and outside the Yahoo! ecosystem is what makes it truly compelling.  This application goes well beyond my notion of lifestreaming and looks like it will truly change the way in which we connect.

Nokia 6210 Navigator

Nokia 6210 Navigator

Coming in Q3 2008, The 6210 Navigator will really open some new paths in the Personal Navigation market. The navigational enhancements looks very promising and as the first device with both a compass AND a lifetime subscription to the maps enhanced services, the 6210 should please quite a few.

The device is quite small and feels great in hand. The compass enables the maps to auto rotate based on your heading so there should be no excuses for getting lost in new places. I’m not sure if this is the first one but the 6210 offers global HSDPA frequencies enhancing the value even further. I believe it will retail for around €300.

Nokia Press Day … Morning keynote

IMG_0251

Captured in realtime with the N810…

OPK started sharing stats on devices and Nokia’s success in music and cameras (100 milliona and 200 million respectively). They have also sold some 35 million GPS devices and are looking to offer a new array of location based devices with the 6210 which a very handy pedestrian mode offered in maps 2.0. Eventually this will be rolled into other devices as well. First ever with pedestrian maps. I have time scheduled with this device on wedesday as a tour of Barcelona. This should be available on beta labs right now.

Share on ovi … A hundred file formats … Looks like twango got a substatial redesign for ovi and desktop mobile web all work or will work together.

N78 announced as the perfect social sharing device … 359 euro coming in q2. Fm transmitter to share music in the car! Geotagging is a big Nokia push and a focus on the N78. Essentially the successor to the N73 but with a mega update! Looks great in black.

The successor to the N95 … N96 focused on the evolutionary usage patterns of the early adopter. N95 with turbo has become n96 supports full flash ie youtube support. 16GB flash hi speed usb … Full movie transferred with 2 min. There’s a kickstand for media consumption which is really nice.

QA … Touch is coming but as a real ourposeful inclusion not just as a gimmick. Touch will also arrive differently across devices based on how it be best applied.

Video services… And carrier relations?

Pictures to come …

Yahoo Board to Reject Microsoft Bid

A not so subtle way of asking MS to raise the bid…

After a series of meetings over the past week, Yahoo’s board determined that the $31 per share offer ‘massively undervalues’ Yahoo, the person said. It also doesn’t account for the risks Yahoo would be taking by entering into an agreement that might be overturned by regulators. The board plans to send a letter to Microsoft on Monday, spelling out its position.

Yahoo’s board believes that Microsoft’s is trying to take advantage of the recent weakness in the company’s share price to ‘steal’ the company. The decision to reject the offer signals that Yahoo’s board is digging in its heels for what could be a long takeover battle. The company is unlikely to consider any offer below $40 per share, the person said. [WSJ]

Getting Ready for Mobile World Congress in Barcelona!

I started pulling my gear together tonight and as you can see here I’ve got a lot of goodies ready to go.

On the software side I’m ready with Qik, Flixwagon, Fon, Boingo and Devicescape as well as mobile blogging via Maemo Wordpy on the Nokia N810 so I’m feeling good about my travel kit.

If you are going to be there, let’s try to meet up! I’m really looking forward to meeting as many people as possible!

MTA Goes Mobile

I am not sure when this kicked in, but great news for Metro NY travelers… the MTA site has been mobilized. I was just browsing for my train tomorrow as I am getting an earlier start and noticed the new mobile call out. Here’s what it looks like from my N95:

MTA Mobile MTA Mobile

Phone browsers should be redirected to the mobile site automatically. I checked out the direct URL in the hopes that this might work on other devices like my Nokia Tablet, but the URL, http://mobile.useablenet.com/mt/http://www.mta.info does not seem to like anything but phones. Upon further investigation, I was able to use the actual schedule page on my tablet which is really the only part I care about anyway. I can’t understand why they would not simply offer an open m.mta.info instead, but that was clearly not my decision to make.

Personal Broadcasting – Rocking the System

In my experience the ability to begin broadcasting, inform your friends and maintain a dialog is both incredibly social but amazingly powerful! I’ve been dabbling with Qik and Flixwagon and this area of mobile development is simply fantastic. When I covered the Web2 Summit last fall, my coverage was limited to 1 min videos (the file size limit from Shozu) and they had to upload afterwards. It was hardly slow, but there were a few steps involved to publish and I could not interactive with the audience in real time – taking questions or monitoring comments.

The game has completely changed now. Both Qik and Flixwagon offer live streaming in a few clicks … open the app, stream. In case you missed it, Flixwagon worked with MTV to cover yesterday’s Super Tuesday event. The World Economic Forum in Davos featured videos from Scoble, Loic Le Meur and others. Next week you’ll be seeing a lot of video from the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona which I’ll be attending and streaming!

Thanks Stefan!

Devicescape 2.0

devicescape logo

Devicescape received a nice update to 2.0 today and allows secure and simple access to paid and free hotspots automatically. I’ve added a few hidden APs from the office as well as my home network to my list to start combined with my Boingo Mobile and FON credentials so I can easily connect my N95 pretty much anywhere I want to go! The update does not yet include a new client for the Nokia Tablet, but I’m sure that’s coming soon.

For consumers, Devicescape 2.0 provides immediate access from any device to millions of hotspot locations. Access to free and open hotspots requires no sign up. It simply works right “out of the box.” Also, the service is easily extensible to password protected networks and credentials can be entered once on the fly on the device or in advance via a web site. You can even add your home network and securely share with friends. Additionally, Devicescape constantly seeks hotspots, and notifies users when they have a secure and verified Wi-Fi connection. I’m a mobile WiFi Hotspot with JoikuSpot Light

Stefan noted an awesome new application today called JoikuSpot Light which of course is in beta but solves a need quite a few power users have been seeking. If you carry a few different devices like I do but only have one SIM, it can be tricky to use more than one at a time when you are away from wifi.

I realize this is not for everyone, but the ability to convert my 3.5G HSDPA signal into an accessible WiFi access point is truly killer. I can now openly share my data service with multiple devices simultaneously. I was alerted to Stefan’s post over Jaiku during my morning commute and was able to download the app directly to my N95. A few minutes later I had it installed and my N800 was connected. I also happened to have the N81 8GB in my bag so I popped that out and activated WiFi. Within a matter of minutes I had three devices sharing the same network connection!

Connected to JoikuSpot

While DUN is a great way to connect between a two devices, the option to go broader is very appealing to me. Increasingly more devices have WiFi inside and this extends the range of where you can consider using things goodies. As of right now there’s really only one negative which is that your openly broadcasting your WiFi signal. This is somewhat solved by that fact that the signal strength is not massively powerful. I don’t know whether this is an intentional notion to conserve power or a limitation of the device. Regardless it would certainly make me feel better to see the ability to either hide my AP or simply enable some security.

joikuspot

JoikuSpot runs a simple captive portal that offers a bit of branding (perhaps a reason the AP is open) which is fine, but it actually eats your initial browser request so keep that in mind. This is a free application and if it’s going to stay that way through the (currently) ad-less portal than I am good with that.

Here’s a quick pic of JoikuSpot in action on my N95. You can see there’s some active traffic which is my laptop snagging the screenshot above.

Super Bowl Commericals

While the game was surprisingly solid this year, I found the commercials to be pretty poor. Usually there are more than a couple that stand out, but it’s as if the writer’s strike impacted the ad business as well.

If you’d like to see them, Ad Age is hosting them all for your review… feel free to debate me on this, but it seems like the smart move would have been saving the money on most of these spots.

I laughed at Will Ferrell, but that’s almost cheating for Bud. Victoria’s Secret spot was well played (pun intended) though I think the NFL had the best spot. I guess I was lucky to miss GoDaddy this year as I think it ran while I was getting my daughter to bed.

Microsoft Offers to Buy Yahoo

WHOA! Guess this is Microsoft’s new strategy for Google…

“Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Corp on Friday said it had offered to acquire Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) Inc in a proposed cash and stock deal valued at $44.6 billion.

Microsoft said it had offered to buy Yahoo for $31 per share, which it said represented a 62 percent premium above the company’s closing stock price on Nasdaq on Thursday.”[NYT]

2D Barcodes – Keep it Simple, Get embedded!

atmaspheric | endeavors — QR Code

Silicon Alley Insider drew my attention to a new project at Google designed to embed 2D Barcodes into print ads. On the surface this seems like an interesting idea and I like the 2D/QR/Semacodes. They are pretty easy to deal with as a geek and in theory can provide shortcuts for text entry for URLs, text and phone numbers. I say in theory because I’ve become pretty damn fast with T9 on the N95 and it’s hard to beat QWERTY for entering URLs, the main thing you see 2D codes represent.

Google’s idea is not new if you consider the CueCat from early 2000 which as you might recall, sucked. It sucked (and boy did it ever) because the idea was that when you’d see a code in a magazine you would then get up from your couch and bring your magazine over to your computer where the CueCat was tethered. This is not exactly how people consider doing things. When you are already at the computer, why not just type the url directly in rather than go through a special process which takes more time?

This brings me back to QR Codes … We are still in the early days here and I’m guessing the only people who really care are the mobile geeks. It’s great that it’s “really big in Japan,” but they’ve been mobile focused for a long time — and this is an entirely new way to do things for Americans. My Nokia N-Series mobiles have had access to barcodes for a while and I’ve dabbled. You can hit that one at the top of the post to go right back to my site if you like – helpful I know.

The issue which could very easily kill adoption on arrival is that you have to load an application on your phone other than the camera in order to make this useful. A lot could be solved with some software engineering and I’d like to see that happen, but it’s likely to be a forward moving thing — and not really able to help those with current high end handsets.

Nokia is actively experimenting with additional functionalities through betalabs and location tagger is a good example of a small step towards embedding new functionality. While it’s an application you have to run, it can be set to run in the background on startup and is likely to find its way into the OS itself with a future (FP2?) release. I’m willing to bet that we’ll see embedded 2D codes and a reader in the imaging application within Android software stack when it arrives this year.

Software applications can show us how things work, but as a long term solution they run the risk of keeping QR codes outside of broader adoption. The gimmick of seeing the code on an ad is not enough to get this to fly … ease of use and convenience through embedded functionality is what we really need to see.

QIK Updated – VGA Streaming from your N95!

Qik Updated!

This is very cool – Qik Updated tonight and you can now stream VGA quality from your N95 … while this is not the most interesting of videos, it will certainly show the quality. I streamed this over my home wifi since I only have EDGE access from the house. My only request for Qik now is to support the phone’s memory cards for storage so we can broadcast longer. I’ve actually been cleaning my phone out a bit to make sure there room on board…

Nokia – Why must DUN crash my N95?

Why must Dial up Networking (DUN) crash my N95-3? It happens so regularly I often think twice about using DUN when on the train for my daily commute. When I used an N73 or E61 with my Nokia 770 internet tablet and subsequently the N800, I never had any issues and in fact left things connected all the time. Since getting the US capable 3G N95, I’ve found it’s only a matter of time til I crash after initiating a connection. I had the same issues with the N810 when it was here as I’ve had with the N800 so I’m convinced it’s the phone rather than the tablet causing the issue.

If I had to guess on what’s causing crashes I’d have to point to when my connection shifts between EDGE and 3G/3.5G but I can’t be sure. Today as an example of not crashing my phone and N800 have been connected for much of the day in a non-moving location all the while connected by 3G. On the train however things seem to flicker between speeds as well as towers and I find my phone locked up. I usually have a bunch of things running on the phone, but have also just had a DUN connection working when the freezes have occurred… I’ve become remarkably quick at popping the back cover off and flipping the battery out, but that was not really a skill I was looking to hone.

The N73 + N800 combo was truly bullet proof. I never had any connection issues and rode the same train line (before 3G rolled out). I had the N800 set to switch over to DUN from Wifi because I knew it would just work. Now, as much as I hate writing this, I am much less sure and even reluctant to automatically connect to the N95. Instead I find I use my N95 more solo than in conjunction with the tablet … and that’s actually not my ideal way to go mobile.

Anyone else finding these issues? I’ve yet to see anything from Nokia in any formal communication regarding a bug. I’d be more than happy to test things and if you would prefer to contact me direct, Nokia, please do. I know you read this. My email is atmasphere atmasphere net.

WSJ Enables Mobile Access, but Google takes it down a notch

I honestly don’t know when this activated, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the following while scanning my mail on the train today…

WSJ links now mobile friendly

You might recognize the mail app as Gmail which uses the Google proxy to mobilize links so this is not that huge a deal except that the google proxy is pretty gnarly compared to what I saw with the view HTML link from Gmail. Google in my humble opinion does an average job, not great compared to mippin or mowser or whatever the WSJ is actually using.

As you can see here, the Google view is on the left and the way the WSJ wants to show it is on the right:

Google Mobile view of the WSJ WSJ Mobile

You can see the WSJ is trying to serve an enhanced mobile page even with an ad, while google suppressing things, which can’t make them too happy. I’d really like to choose which mobile proxy gets used for these activities and ideally would even have the option to turn it off as I go as a browser preference. Google is trying to simplify the experience from a mobile app to the web, which is admirable, but in many cases they render the page in far to rudimentary a manner.

Gizmo5 launches Backdoor Dialing

gizmo5 labs logo

Thanks to a tip from Andy, I just learned about a very cool new Gizmo service!

Approximately 11% of US telephones, including mobile numbers and land lines from carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc., are connected via VoIP. Working with telecom partners we are now making it possible to dial these numbers without going through the traditional phone system.

This means you can call certain mobile and land line numbers from any computer connected to the net and talk for free. Because these calls are bypassing the traditional phone network entirely there is no per minute fee or other charge for the caller regardless of where they call from. [Gizmo5]

gizmo5 backdoor dialing

As you can see this is clearly focused as an end run around the standard PTSN dialing universe. While I don’t see a use for this every day, there are certainly situations when using Gizmo to make free calls could be quite nice. No roaming charges for example internationally… If your number is supported you can take advantage of this service by dialing 0101 and your 10 digit number from anywhere in the world as long as you use a Gizmo or SIP based client. I happen to have a few of those here and look forward to testing this out. An added bonus here is that the recipient can call you back on the number they see on callerID and the return call to you is also free.

I checked my home number and it’s available for use, while my cell and grand central numbers are not. You can test your numbers on the Gizmo5 site.

iPod touch is now a “mainstream Wi-Fi mobile platform”

Trojan Horse activated …

‘We believe one of the iPod [touch’s] future directions is to become the first mainstream Wi-Fi mobile platform, running all kinds of mobile applications,’ company executives said.

The iPod touch led a significant amount of Apple’s iPod shipment growth during the first quarter, particularly in Japan. Though US iPod sales came in relatively flat year-over-year, the Apple executives said they were happy to sacrificed sheer unit volume in the short term for a long-term objective.

While the executives didn’t explain what the iPod touch’s future directions would entail, the statement marks a reversal of Apple’s previous approach to the iPod line. While introducing the fifth-generation iPod a few years back, chief executive Steve Jobs said that the device remained ‘all about the music’ — a statement now challenged by equal attention to web browsing and other wireless data features. 2008 Prediction – Lexicon Digital Communications will be a non-starter

Call me crazy here, but David Caruso does not seem to not have any idea what’s going on with online media (sorry but Cnet does not do embeds) and that appears to be the crux of what his company is all about. Aside from the ridiculous escalator bit in this video here’s what I’ve picked up:

  • solution based company
  • simplification to the internet itself
  • take this format and turn it into something competitive
  • competitive level of content
  • sleezy pickup

Here’s another take from G4TV:

But perhaps the best video they’ve made so far has to be the one on their site (I promise this video will be a waste of your time, but does include more escalator riding) which says the least of all, yet proves this is purely an ego play.

Admittedly I am interested in learning What happens when the King of Broadcast Worldwide meets the Chief Architect of Digital Media and Content Delivery? Not.
