This is an odd movie, but it shows a Yonah system playing Quake and killing (in time) a presumably current system. Yonah is the chip we’ll be seeing VERY soon from Intel and should be in PCs and probably Macs as well.

Arrested Development humor cutting edge

I was catching up on last week’s episode of Arrested Development last and I caught a joke that was well current. Oscar was being imprisoned for looking like his twin brother George and the warden says “no more Imoscar.com this time and Oscar says, this time I think I’ll do a podcast. I know Podcast is the word of the year, but damn, that’s pretty close to the net culture… which is probably the population that would buy episodes if they offered them online as Fox cancels.

In case you have not seen the show, I highly recommend it. It’s hilarious, laugh out loud hilarious.

Verizon Blackberry 7130e – no DUN for you

I can’t quite figure out why the BlackBerry 71xx series devices don’t support DUN, other than some silly corporate politics. The latest version the 7130e from Verizon supports their Broadband Access (EVDO) network and in the ad I just saw in the WSJ, says specifically that you it can provide tethered modem access for your laptop.

What’s the real issue here? Greed, right? Clearly Verizon and other carriers who sell these data-centric devices want to really send you a supplemental data PC card rather than let a single device manage your total access. Now you have 2 devices on the network rather than just one.

I use the Blackberry 7100t from T-Mobile and have searched around for a hack to use it as a bluetooth modem but this does not seem to exist. Instead, I use the SIM card from my data card in a bluetooth capable phone so I can have DUN access while on the go. The PC Card does not easily support Mac so I don’t feel so bad moving things around like this… The interesting thing is it’s all the same, but the carriers clearly would see it differently… to them there are specific uses for each and only those specific activities (even though the same type of info passes through) are the only ones you are supposed to have.

Audio Tools

I’ve added a few new tools of note to my gadget bag and thought I’d share…

First, Ashley was kind enough to get me a new 60GB 5G iPod and it’s a wonderful change from my previous 3G 40GB model. I love the color, size and resolution of the screen. The overall size is remarkable – expecially compared to my previous full size iPod. The only negative thing I can consider is that in video mode the battery life is MUCH shorter than I might like. It’s probably around 3 hours total if you do video, so plan accordingly. I was watching Battlestar Gallactica on my flight west last week and had to end before I was really ready when the battery gave out.

On my return I decided I finally deserved some real headphones and picked up a pair of Shure E4c E4c Sound Isolating Earphones. the sound improvement is simply remarkable compared to my older Sony Fontopia headphones which I liked and in fact had used through a second pair. The Shure headphones blow the doors off previous headphones I’ve tried. I used the foam ear pieces on my flight back but have since tried all the parts and find that the smallest rubber (black) fit my ears best. I love them and will be using these on my (1 hour) commute and through all my travels.

For iTunes, I added an audio plugin called Volume Logic which I would also recommend. It’s a significant sound enhancer and makes on computer listening that much better.

Personal Update

As you might have noted in my last post, and lack of posts prior to that one last week, I’ve been extremely busy. I am crashing through an amazingly high profile and short term client project which will have quite a few of us cranking through the holidays. I am actually booked on it full-time which is funny considering my other projects make for a “full-time” job is well. Not exactly how I was allocated per our retainer, such is life. It’s all good – even though my wife thinks otherwise since the hours and recent and pending travel are nutty.

When I accepted this gig in May, I thought it was going to be what is actually starting to really become… patience young jedi. I am working on some very cool stuff (to a geek like me anyway) and dealing with some new and very smart people on the client side.

It’s nice that the significant uptick has taken place right after my switch over to the Powerbook since that is the best and most comfortable place for me to manage the unbelievable assault of email and information. I am accustomed to a lot of email, but I get an average of 150-200 work emails a day that all require a nice piece of my attention. That in addition to a constant flow of meetings and traveling between locations makes for interesting days and weeks. I’ve amazed myself at how much information it seems possible to manage though frankly it’s totally daunting all the same. I’ve been working through Kinkless GTD and OmniOutliner as my primary keeper of info and think it’s a solid combo. Mail is locked to Entourage, though Mail.app seems to connect nicely to Exchange. No chance being even more fringe than I already am as the only non-creative with a Mac.

Otherwise all is well here… Suburban life is excellent and we are enjoying the house beyond expectations. There are many projects here to complete to further enhance things, but it’s a complete quality of life improvement.

Snow Shots

What a messy day today is turning out to be… We had probably about 4 inches of snow at the house this am which was beautiful, but now that I am in the city, it’s seriously messy.& Unlike the snow in westchester, the city snow turns black and slushy pretty quick.
Here are some snaps I took on the way to work… There’s a quick video on the prior post. All done with the ever-handy N90.

N90 DUN resolved

Andy hooked me up with a Nokia Europe link today that enabled a config for the N90 and made getting online (as I am now) via bluetooth quite simple.

I highly recommend this as a great way to gain access beyond Wifi. If I was on Cingular, I could be enjoying EDGE or better, but TMO currently only does GPRS. It still works well for email – even with my VPN active.

Here are the steps for anyone else looking to do this:

  • Head to the Nokia Site for starters and follow the on-page wizard.
  • Once you’ve received your configuration MMS messages and saved them you should have a config for your carrier (T-Mobile in my case) ready to rock on your phone. I was actually missing this step before and made an incorrect that the unlocked N90 knew anything about how to connect to my data service without this.
  • Now that the N90 is ready to connect, you need to make sure that your computer is also ready. On my PowerBook, I opened Network Preferences and added a new connection entitled Bluetooth. While it’s not necessary to make a new connection, I find it easy to manage the litany of ports and VPN details I need by keeping things separate. In the Bluetooth network connection choose the second drop down which says Network Status by Default and seen here:

Network Status

  • From the Network Status menu, you want to choose Network Port Configurations and if you are following my plan to keep it simple and separate, you’ll want to uncheck all but Bluetooth and VPN if you need it.
  • Assuming you have not done this before, you’ll need to make one more stop online before we can complete this process… Ross Barkman has created an amazing set of modem scripts for various phones. choose what you need and follow the simple installation (copy the files).
  • Heading back to Network Preferences, you can now select, Bluetooth again from the second drop down menu. Add internet2.voicestream.com as your phone number in the PPP tab.
  • In the Bluetooth tab, you need to pick a modem and courtesy of Ross Barkman, you now have quite a few new options. I am using the Nokia GPRS CID1 script and so far so good. Be sure to disable error correction and uncheck the wait for dial tone setting.
  • Under TCP / IP make sure your configured for PPP.
  • Hit Apply Now

You are basically done at this point. I leave the modem icon in my menu bar and have my connection set to connect as needed, though you can initiate manually as well. I just got this working today and was connected for the better part of my one hour commute home tonight on Metro North.

Sharepoint is horrendous

I regularly have to use Sharepoint based on a pretty significant global deal that was made far down in the enterprise that is my employer…

It sucks.

We use our sharepoint install for global communications, file sharing and client work sites. Today I discovered that I am unable to upload a file period from the Mac. The menu is simply not there and I tested this in Firefox, Safari and IE. I also discovered recently while still on Windows that Firefox gets a different URL structure than IE which causes some nice breaks when you try to share the location of files with your co-workers. Sharepoint is a 100% Windows extremist application that even with Windows XP and IE works only some of the time. I’m sure part of the pain is the implementation we have, but man is it poor.

At a prior job, we used Notes, which was painful as well, but it actually worked.

Cingular Goes 3G

Daily Wireless reports::

GSM-based Cingular is moving towards UMTS (3G) which provides 200-320 Kbps data rates using 5Mhz channels. A software upgrade, HSDPA, should boost speeds to 400-700 Kbps next year. Cingular's BroadbandConnect uses HSDPA/UMTS technology.

Cingular's 3G network is the first widely available service in the world to use HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology. Cingular will initially launch the BroadbandConnect service in Austin (TX.), Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Portland (OR.), Salt Lake City, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose (CA.), Seattle, Tacoma (Wash.) and Washington D.C.

One question… Where’s NYC?

Powerbook Based Commute

There's a cool thing that happens pretty regularly on the train which is that you can look right into a train on the next track. I'm not sure why I like this so much, perhaps it's a bit voyeuristic or something…

This morning, it happened when looked up and saw the train on my left, I realized I had the N90 in my pocket and decided to capture the moment. I think it actually turned out pretty cool… That's my PowerBook mid-screen.
