  1. Hi Jonathan,

    RichardG from the Nseries WOM World here. Believe it or not, you’re not actually the first person to ask that question, Stephan over at the RingNokia blog asked it about two weeks ago when upgrading the firmware on his N93.

    After some research we found out that this is simply limitation of the current software updating solution and Nokia are working to remove the need for this in future models. Like I said to Stephan, sorry it’s nothing more interesting!

    NSU updates for the N93 and N93i will continue have to be done with the SIM-card still inside the device, as mentioned however, they are working around this for future models.

  2. That is pretty lame unfortunately though I do sincerely appreciate the info.

    Last night and today I am flashing an N73, N93, N80i and E61. Moving the SIM around seems like a silly exercise especially since you can’t use the phone anyway when it’s connected and being either updated or backed up. I received a call during a backup on my E61 and it Blue Screened Vista… not too cool. If I’d had the SIM in the other phone I want to use today, things would not have crashed.

  3. There’s alot of things about Nokia’s desktop apps that make you go “hmm.” For instance, both the NSU and the Maploader require you to have a constant internet connection both while it’s downloading the firmware/map AND when it’s loading them onto the phone. ANd if you lose this connection, you have to start over. Make sense? No.

  4. Ha ha;
    it’s interesting what control freaks Nokia are.

    But ok; maybe they started out thinking of the operator rather than the end-user as their customer– and felt a need to first and foremost serve the operator.

    In that scenario, having the sim in and maybe a few other nosey software could have maybe prevented a conflict of interest with their “customer” the operator, where a software could have done some checking.

    though ok, i guess in today’s day & age this isnt terribly useful.
