working on it…

bringing the site back to life…

re-imported posts from MT which covers the bulk of my history (goes back to September 2002) and am still working out some kinks with permalinks and some older posts. I was able to recover the most recent stuff, but think a few weeks may have been lost in my migraine induced haste last night. I ended up doing a nice clean install of the latest nightly of WordPress which offers some nice feature enhancements as well as some tweaks. Hopefully this will be my last crtical stupid mistake.

Have to work out a more robust backup method for all this…

Coming soon… the return of my sidebar with links and photos.

You’ll notice the clean look…

Well – lesson learned.

I will not mess with things not broken (much),

I’ve lost a great deal of history here and am trying to restore things … for now I am leaving this clean installation up and running until I can recover. My head hurts too much at the moment to do much more

iTunes 4.5 a sign of what’s really in-store…

So in case you missed the news, Apple updated iTunes to version 4.5 which comes with some very cool features as well as additions to the store. The features are great and include Party Shuffle which is a nice way to handle dynamic playlists, iMix which lets you publish a playlist to the store to share with anyone. It would be nice to add an affiliate purchase scheme to kick-back some whufie to the user in the form of iTunes bucks. I also really like the addition of Apple Lossless Format:

iTunes can give you that quality with the new Apple Lossless encoder. Youll get the full quality of uncompressed CD audio using about half the storage space. You can copy music in this format onto your iPod or iPod mini, to take perfect audio wherever you go.

The big deal to me though seems to be the addition of VIDEO! Apple bundled in their movie preview site which is the largest movie streaming site around and then added Music VIDEOS for PURCHASE! Video for purchase!! Steve had alluded to the possibility of videos for sale, and I think it’s really just a preview of what is really coming next…

Apple now has a full multi-media store that sells music, music videos and audio books. Movies and TV shows are are the logical next step. An iTunes store service with reasonable pricing (say $3.95 a TV show and $9.99 a movie) could offset a good portion of downloads if done right because it would be Apple simple. I think even a rental market would be an interesting play. The DRM might work in a similar way your VOD does now on cable… you get get XX hours or days to watch as many times as you like and then it expires. Apple could own the on-demand market for video in an instant, because they know how to deliver very high quality content in a very easy to use manner and even integrate it simply with devices to enjoy it all on.

It could only get better with the addition of a new portable device…or of course a set-top box.

Migraine!

I got a whoppper of a migraine today… Only my second one and the first was about 8 years ago. It’s hard to describe really but the pain was an intense throbbing on the right side of my head near by temple accompanied by a pounding behind my right eye. I first noticed something was going wrong when my vision became pretty blurry just prior to the pain and I was literally unable to focus or read. Pretty disconcerting considering I don’t wear glasses and generally have good vision. As I became incredibly sensitive to light (sun and light bulbs) I realized what was going and with some help from Ashley was able to lie down for a bit.

I managed to get out briefly and even eat something which was good, both for the air and to just get out. I found Excendrine Migraine at the drugstore, which I took with lunch followed by an hour-long nap. I definitely felt better when I woke up but far from great. I don’t really feel perfect now either… I still have a pretty dull headache which some Advil is working on now that we’ve had some dinner.

Needless to say it’s been a rough day.

Yahoo! Maps with wireless access points

This is very cool… just click the radio button at the bottom of the map you display and you can see all the hotspots in the area. It’s hard to tell whether they are commercial and free or just commercial, but helpful regardless.

Not sure if people are already aware, but Yahoo! Maps now shows “Wi-fi Hotspots,”, if the option is checked. They are represented by little Centrino logos… [Warchalking]

Steven Saunders – Terrorist – used the OQO!

So they get all the toys is that it… The OQO made its primetime television debut tonight on 24. Carrying no influence from the user… I really would love a full sized computer that manages to fit in my pocket. The OQO was very cool. Saunders casually slid it open to type a quick command and the reviewed video status, I presume via WIFI as he made his escape.

Nice product placement, but wish Jack Bauer had the toys… he has to settle for his own private helicopter.

Maxtor’s New Crippled External Hard Drive for DVRs

Just caught this via PVRblog and am very disappointed though not surprised…

Ernest over at Corante has a great story on a new Maxtor DVR product: “Crippled External Hard Drive for DVRs.” Turns out that Maxtor is producing a new external USB/firewire backup drive for DVR set-top boxes, but it won’t be sold to customers but instead only to cable and satellite companies. Since you won’t actually own the device, you won’t have any rights to get at the data inside the drives, apart from your set-top box.

AOL updates its blog service

Obvious and logical additions… Good to see it happening. I like the AOL Journal service though I am not the audience they are seeking.

New features let members add to their Web logs via instant message or text message. Diarists can also ask to receive alerts whenever readers add comments to their journals. [CNET News.com]

Just one of the many decisions you make as parents …

Quick, which is better for the environment, cloth or disposable diapers? If you’re just not sure, you’re not alone. Despite reams of research, no one can give a definitive answer. [Wired News]

Customers Like Me

Good idea coming through the Verizon marketing department and noted by Slate. We’ll certainly have to wait and see how well it extends as new products and services are presented.

Assuming the Elliot family is working well with consumers, I’d like to see this extended into other marketing channels like DM and Interactive. Targeting families who would be most like the Elliots would be a great start and be an easy way to sell services by direct comparison to your own family. You could also consider the use of a DVD with the existing footage, plus interactive content in-mail to convey this richer targeted message to key customer segments… If the pieces were broken into logical bite-sized segments, you could also utilize the online channel, though it seems they are selling broadband so you would not want to be proving how well someone else’s connection works too well.

Why make a sitcom-mercial? I asked Amy Rubenstein, Verizon vice president for brand management. She says there are two main goals, and the first is simply to entertain. These ads are meant to feel fresh, with their sitcom tone and their appealing, mixed-race cast. Rubenstein says you’re less likely to “tune these ads out, or say, ‘I’ve seen this before.’ “

The second goal is more complex. Rubenstein says that the Elliot household will serve as a “consistent brand platform.” Rather than launching new products from scratchwith a battle each time to build awareness (“here’s the new calling plan FROM VERIZON”)they’ll just slip the new product into the Elliots’ daily lives. Cheaper calling plan? Mom Elliot loves it! Better Internet features? Dad’s a big fan!

Verizon gets a brand icon (the likable Elliot family) that’s also a familiar and comfortable setting in which to introduce new products. It keeps everything under one roof (literally, though fictionally) so as a viewer, you link Verizon’s services together in your mind. Which is the crucial concept for a communications giant. They desperately want you to buy a whole suite of their products, not pick and choose your phone/mobile/Internet out of a grab-bag of providers. [Slate Magazine]

RSS Can Help You Land a Job?!

I’m still working on the getting a job part, but am enjoying feeds from the major career sites in my newsreader instead of dealing with email links to web.

RSSJobs is a new service that helps you keep track of new postings on Monster.com (kinda like the eBay RSS service a couple posts back). It is my understanding the Monster already provides a search agent that will e-mail you; but none of like giving out our e-mail addresses to big scary corporations any more, right? Post your resume ahead of the crowd with little help from RSS. Yippie! (I love all these great new services.)

Movie Web Site Stirs Cloning Controversy

I hope this does not mean we are in for an advertorial-like wrapper on things… This would certainly change the percerption and potency of the message in things like the Subserviant Chicken and I, Robot..

A Web site meant to promote upcoming film drama “Godsend” is stirring controversy among people who oppose human cloning and want the site shut down because they think the site is real, the film’s makers say. [Yahoo! News]

No Fee for Qwest VOIP

Gotta like Qwest… I believe they were the first communications company to offer data only DSL and now they are dropping fees associated with VOIP. I respect their leadership and acknowledgment that there is more than traditional voice to sell.

Qwest Communications International Inc. (Q.N) said on Monday it would no longer levy connection fees on calls made to customers on its network from Internet phone services. [Yahoo! News]

The Sky is Falling!!

Just kidding though it is raining today…

It seems the general advertising community is finally waking up to realize that aside from how ridiculous the ability to track return on investment is and that ratings are basically bogus, consumers are getting away from them as well thanks to technology. We’ll see what happens next as more money moves to iTV applications (eventually), interaction online advertising, and one would think… integrated direct marketing.

Spending just can’t happen without some real understanding of what happens next. You’ve got to attribute marketing dollars against what channels enable better and more profitable customers. I believe the mass brands actually have the greatest challenge to overcome in this newer world as they are not accustomed to limiting the scope of their message to people who might be more interested rather than anyone who might just happen to be watching.

Here’s an extract from Cnet on the latest from Forrester Research

The premise of the report is that digital video recorders (DVRs) like TiVo that let TV viewers record programming and skip over commercials easily, will be in 30 million homes within the next five years, up from an estimated 3 million today. That has national advertisers considering their options, given the expectation that DVRs will undermine the potency of commercials. It also has them resigned to spending more on advertising in the future, only to reach fewer people.

At least three-fourths of the 55 national advertisers Forrester surveyed said they will cut spending on commercials as a result. Of those, 63 percent plan to reduce spending by 20 percent or more. A majority said they will first scale back national cable ads, followed by national network ads, local spots and local cable ads.

More than 90 percent of advertisers also want new measurements for advertising ratings and program viewing. They say the TV industry will need to report audience measurements outside classical benchmarks like “reach” (for number of people reached) and “frequency” (for how often they see an ad).

Advertisers called on TV programmers to work with device manufacturers and cable companies on DVR features that can help spur innovation and measurement in the marketplace, the report found. Three-fourths of advertisers also believe that they will have to begin creating content and programming to invigorate their brand campaigns.

In addition, advertisers plan to shift their money to other media. Nearly half of advertisers said they will transfer dollars to other traditional media, including magazines and radio, in which ads aren’t as easily skipped.

Three-fourths of advertisers surveyed said they will boost budgets for the Internet, including banner ads and rich-media spots. Fifty-three percent said they will invest in search engine marketing, which lets advertisers track and measure the effectiveness of their campaigns.

A majority of national advertisers expect other forms of TV ads to evolve and become more effective than the status quo, according to the report. Targeted TV advertising to specific households is on the horizon, too, drawing interest from at least half of those surveyed. DVRs are ultimately designed to make it easier to track people’s interests and demographics for targeted advertising. A handful of advertisers say they would pay a premium for those capabilities. Comcast now with Moxi

Steve Perlman created WebTV, sold it to Microsoft and then went on to create Moxi which merged with Digeo, now owned by Paul Allen. Up until today’s announcement that Comcast is going to test their set-top boxes only Charter (also owned by Paul Allen) were giving them a whirl. The box has capabilities well beyond what your average cable customer is used to, though the Scientific Atlanta 8000 is close on the DVR front. The main difference is that these boxes can serve as media centers and stream pictures and music through to a home theater in addition to their DVR capabilities. There’s even a wi-fi connection kit that allows a second TV to get in on the action so you can really have a slick set-up for your home.

I first picked up on this unit in news from the January 2001 CES, where it won a best in show… but has been heard of little since other than the deal with Charter.

Here’s some more on what we knew then….I’m hopeful this test is positive and that other carrier are attracted to the use of the box as well. They say it supports HD and can be connected to burners for archival though no word on how exactly the DRM might limit things…

Star Wars Kid versus Kill Bill

Stop what you are doing right now and watch this… absolutely hilarious!

This is the best internet video mashup evar: the Star Wars Kid (a net-icon famous for having captured his Darth Maul light-staff fights on video, thus becoming the subject of Internet mockery, which led to really bogus lawsuit) matted extremely well into the Kill Bill trailer. I am in awe of the video effects wizardry here.
