Tor

I installed and started playing with Tor over the weekend. It’s a pretty cool P2P system for anonymizing your online tracks and includes a very ease to use proxy for your online traffic courtesy of the EFF. I’ve noticed things slow down a bit – though perhaps a small price to pay for cruising around securely. My only issue is how I will need to customize the proxy (it’s Privoxy and comes with the OS X installer) to allow for ads (yes ads), referrers and cookies. Without these tools, it becomes difficult to do certain things – like edit or delete a page in WordPress.

I do like it though and have to see if after reading the documentation more deeply, I can create a balance of privacy and accessibility.

  1. I’m a disorganized Smartphone neopyte on a budget looking at mostly Blackberry and Treo. Recently came across this Blog. So what is the latest?

I currently use Verizon with only a cel phone and have some time left on my contract but also have $100 credit toward my next phone with them and ready to invest a little more in my productivity. To date they only offer the Treo 600 and Blackbery 6750,7250,& 7750. Verizon’s comparison info shows the Treo with the better battery and the only as “internet ready”(?) http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller.

My girl friend has a BB and I love the trackwheel and larger Qwerty keys but I would like the idea of third party apps for the Treo 600 (ugh, I wish Verizon would get the 650!).

The company I work for is small and doesn’t even use Exchange though they have considered it recently. We run Windows 2000 Pro w/ Windows Server 2003. The boss uses a Treo 600 w/ Cingular is interested in BB but has never used one. There is a chance I won’t be with this company long term as a variable, too.

Mostly I want to be able to sync Outlook, manage contacts and use both email and voice but I’d like to access the web to pay bills online and Google around.

Well I gotta run. I welcome all comments and I’m interested what you decided and how that’s working out.

    Thanks!

  2. This is an interesting place to ask this question since it was not close to the topic of my post, but I’ll share what I know anyway…

BB is a nice email focused system. If you use exchange you can add in calendar as well as contact sync.

Palm lets you do considerably more. In addition to adding a touch screen you can run countless apps to manage all kinds of info, play games or read books. You also have a choice of email … If you do eventually have access to an exchange server, you can sync calendar and contacts with the latest version of VersaMail which is included in the Treo 650 and available for purchase otherwise. I personally use ChatterEmail which can handle background, push operations.

I recently upgraded to the 650, you might want to read more here – http://www.atmasphere.net/wp/archives/2005/03/15/treo-thoughts
